Aeolian particle wave: crescentic dunes are nomadic and migrate across the desert at more than 100 metres a year. Smaller dunes move faster, and appear to ‘punch through’ the larger dunes. Also known as a barchan, an arc-shaped sand ridge with two horns curving around on either side, formed when winds blow consistently from one direction. There are fields of barchan dunes in a ring around the north pole on the surface of Mars.
