Synopsis
16mm direct animation that intertwines - or 'purls' together - coloured abstractions hand-painted onto clear film leader with 'photogram' images bleached into the emulsion of a strip of black leader; accompanied by an original sound composition.
Description
Purling foregrounds the materiality of 'analogue film'. The digital 'frame' shows the entire width of the 16mm strip, including the sprocket holes, as well as a section of each preceding and successive frame, and the linear scratch scored down the length of the artwork by the digital film scanner. Also visible are the incidental marks of hand-painting, such as tiny specks of fluff and airborne débris, and the frame-by-frame notation between each sprocket hole that guides the choreography of the visual music.
